Introducing Master Tristan

Thank you all for your lovely comments!

We are home and he is beautiful. All is well.
Unfortunately I didn't get the spontaneous labour I was hoping for! I went in to hospital on Thursday morning, had my waters broken at about 8.30am, and despite Carl and I going for lots of walks (and me having waters gushing every where), absolutely NOTHING was happening. At 11.30am I was hooked up to a drip and the midwives started a low dose of syntocinin. They kept increasing the dose until, finally, at 3pm I was officially in labour. After two hours of increasingly rapid and painful contractions I was checked and the midwife and I were both dismayed to discover that there had been no progress whatsoever.

At this point I decided it was time for an epidural and the midwife and my doctor agreed. At 5.30pm the anaesthetist arrived and delivered the blissful relief I needed. After another two hours I was checked again and had dilated from 2cm to 8cm! The doctor was called and told to get there quickly as this baby was coming out!

As soon as my obstetrician arrived he did another examination and found I was fully dilated. At this stage the baby's heartbeat started dipping and dropping erratically, so it was decided that they'd need to speed things up and get him out of there ASAP. So poor little Tristan was assisted out with a vacuum extraction after only 10 minutes of pushing. A very speedy arrival in the end!And yes, at 7 pounds 14 ounces he was smaller than we thought! But still a good size and absolutely divine...of course, I am completely biased, but he is a beautiful bub.

He has a bit of jaundice, but that will disappear over the next few days. He's a champion feeder and I have more milk than he can handle! He's a lovely, lovely boy. Here are some more photos, because I can't get enough of him and everyone loves a newborn bubba!
With Grandma, Huppa (my parents) and of course his very proud big sister Romily:And finally, a big thanks to mum & dad for coming up from Melbourne and looking after Romily for the entire day on Thursday! We're also looking forward to Carl's dad arriving in a few weeks time to meet his much longed for grandson.

All is well with the world :)

Waiting, waiting, waiting

What's a girl to do when waiting? Get busy of course! Romily and I made a delicious banana chocolate cake (inspired by an episode of Dora the Explorer, naturally!), which turned out very nice indeed - we finally had our oven fixed and it now cooks at normal temperatures. I might even attempt some biscuits soon!
And I whipped up two pairs of red corduroy pants and matching appliqued tops - one set for my little guy and another for yet another baby boy, born to one of the girls in my online mums' group. The sets are sized for around three months - both Kylie and I have healthy sized babies, so no doubt they'll both be wearing these outfits in no time at all.

I am feeling very full and very over being pregnant. I am having lots and lots of Braxton Hicks contractions - some rather uncomfortable - which is hopefully a good sign that the labour, when it finally gets under way, will be a lot shorter than the 16 hours I endured last time!

I've had lots of comments from other mums who've had multiple inductions - it seems it's a lot more common than I realised - thanks for the reassurance ladies. Let's hope once my obstetrician breaks my waters on Thursday morning it's only a couple of hours before I have my bubba in my arms :)

(Carl is primed to post the good news, so stay tuned!)

A very hungry caterpillar

Woohoo, I finally worked out foundation piecing and, once I did, this quilt top came together amazingly quickly.
I am really happy with how it turned out!Of course it won't actually get quilted until after the baby arrives, but I managed to get it sandwiched today - with flannel as backing - nice and cosy.

I saw my obstetrician today. Things are slowly starting to happen, so I might get that spontaneous labour after all...but, if not, we are booked in for an amniotomy (breaking the waters) next Thursday morning (21 Aug). Fingers crossed baby #2 makes his arrival before then!

Hooray for maternity leave

Well I am enjoying not going to work! I finished up last Friday and have been taking it relatively easy, sleeping with Romily in the afternoons when I feel like it and getting some study done for uni - yes, I am studying one unit by distance this semester - it's the first unit towards a degree in management studies, which will take about three years part-time.

Today I took myself off to the movies and saw Mamma Mia - it was lots of fun, but I did find myself getting teary half-way through during one of the Abba numbers! I blame it on the pregnancy hormones, but it was a song about watching your kids growing up and then letting them go, wondering where the time went. Romily is three on Tuesday, so I guess I've been thinking along these lines already. But who would've thought I'd cry during Mamma Mia? Meryl Streep has that effect on me apparently - I cried and cried in Bridges of Madison County. She is a wonderful actress - and has a pretty good voice too! We won't talk about Pierce Brosnan's singing though...!

Yesterday Carl and I took Romily to 'Kids Rampage' - an indoor play centre for 1-5 year olds - and she had a great time climbing through all the nets, etc. She loved the ball pit, as you can see.We went to our favourite chocolate shop - Bruno's Truffels - on the way home, stopping there for lunch (alas not of chocolate). We each selected one 'special chocolate' and ate them in the car on the way home. Romily also loved her chocolate, as you can also see from this photo of a very happy girl!I made Carl take some photos of me too - I won't be pregnant for much longer and I'm trying to enjoy it, as it's definitely the last time for me. There's nothing quite like having another human being inside you. And you forget it so quickly after the birth.
Romily also took some photos - it's very interesting to see the world through a nearly 3yo's lens. Here's one of Carl.No sewing getting done here, but I have submitted my first assignment today, so that's given me a bit of breathing space to do some sewing over the weekend. Hopefully I'll have something to show for it early next week. And then it's on to making cupcakes for Romily to take to playgroup on Monday (I bought packet mixes, should be nice and easy now that we have had our oven repaired!) and then her birthday cake for Tuesday. I caved in to her repeated requests for an Iggle Piggle cake - if you don't know who Iggle Piggle is, don't ask! Trust me, you do not want to know. (He's in a British show called In the Night Garden, which is completely weird and off the planet - best viewed only by toddlers!!) I'm going to attempt to make an Iggle Piggle out of royal icing - wish me luck!

Winter's Garden wow

You know those days when you're feeling a little down and sorry for yourself? And then something magical happens to pick you right back up again? Today was one of those days!

I've been having lots of Braxton Hicks contractions and they are getting stronger and stronger - to the point where you just feel like death warmed up. I had an appointment with my obstetrician this morning and he 'had a look' at how things were going - he thinks at least another two weeks to go (at least with all these practice contractions, the labour should be a little more straightforward this time!). This, on top of general '38-weeks and over it', was enough for me to throw a little pitty party. But then I remembered I had two parcel dockets and so headed to the post office on my way back from my appointment.

One was expected - a slow cooker I ordered using my Fly Buys points (which means I got it for free, having accumulated the points from grocery and petrol purchases), which I'm planning to use extensively while the weather's still cold and I'm still in 'oh my god I've got a newborn, a toddler and have had no sleep' phase. I'm going to make chilli con carne later this week to test it out :)
Winter's Garden
The second, was most unexpected and all the more exciting for having received. The lovely, lovely, thoughtful and generous girls in my online quilting group got together and made a quilt for the baby! It's absolutely stunning and I absolutely love it. Romily and Carl both oohed and aahed over it too. What an amazing thing to do. I am totally overwhelmed!

Thank you AJ, Bee, Cylie, Helen, Joy, Kylie, Leah, Mands, Xena and especially Emma, who did all the organising, the construction and the quilting, all the while managing several commissions, a one year old and a toddler. You truly are amazing.

The countdown is on

Well, we've made it to 37 weeks and all is well. I'm hoping to see out this week at work, have a week to 10 days at home and then Bub #2 is all clear to make his grand entrance!
Here's a photo from last weekend - 36 weeks - sorry for the blurry pic...

We had a lovely weekend this one just past, with my father-in-law up from Bendigo for the weekend. It was lovely to see him with his granddaughter.

No sewing to speak of...just too tired! I'm taking it easy until bubs arrives, so there won't be much progress on the crafty front unless I get a burst of energy from somewhere!

Strawberries & Cream is done and dusted

Don't you hate those people who finish their swaps before you've even started yours? Makes you feel guilty doesn't it? Well not any more for this little black duck! I have finished and posted Strawberries and Cream and it's on its way to Europe (ouch to the postage charges!). It was remiss of me not to say how big this quilt is! I managed to confuse a couple of you! It finished up at 19 3/4" square. The QSTs finished up at 1 1/2" - all 81 of them!

I am very happy with it - I ended up going with the diagonal cross-hatching for the quilting, using Gutterman sulky thread. Thanks for the suggestions. Here's a photo of the backing fabric - too cute! It's from the Strawberry Lemonade range by Moda.I love it so much that I used it to applique two onesies and make a bib for a girl in my online mother's group who's just had a baby girl. The bib pattern is from Nested. Of course I changed out the velcro tabs for snaps. Have snap machine, will use it!
I was also very lucky during the week to receive the French quilting magazine I won on Nicolette's blog giveaway recently. The very generous and totally sweet Nicolette also sent a gorgeous onesie for Baby#2 as well as some stickers for Romily from the same artist who did the design on the onesie. Thank you Nicolette! All well here. Had a quiet and relaxing weekend. Took Romily down to the lake again and she and Carl had a great time rambling around the castle playground together.
Then we fed some ravenous ducks and went toadstood hunting. There are lots about at the moment.
It was the most gorgeous day...of course since then the weather has turned and it's been windy, raining and freezing the past couple of days. Winter is here with a vengeance! Good thing we spend most of the time inside with the heater on these days.

We have our final ultrasound scan tomorrow - it will be nice to see the baby again before he comes out in about 6 weeks. And nice to see who's been poking me with his toes!

Full moon rising?

Or maybe this post should be called 'look away if you're squeamish'!

I thought it was about time I shared my belly with you all :) Since I took that photo on Saturday my belly button has well and truly 'popped'! Romily thinks poking and squishing it is hilarious fun. So here we are at 30 weeks - only 10 to go. People are starting to ask when I'm due - some look genuinely shocked when I say not for another 10 weeks. I don't think I look that big...yet!This was me last time, pregnant with Romily at about 30 weeks - the bump is about the same size, so we're on track for another 8 pound plus baby :) (I wasn't so brave last time as to reveal all!)

Red and white blocks for Clare

I made two blocks for Quilts for Leukaemia at Easter, with the promise to make another couple soon. Well soon turned into two months, later but here they are all finished! It was working with all that red and white fabric for mum's table runner that spurred me on! (And yes, those are my husband's not-so-sexy knees you can see in the corner of that photo!)
I made up the butterfly block myself, using templates, as a trial run for the two hungry caterpillar quilts I want to make next (one for Rom and one for Bub#2). They were moderately successful. Clare, I hope they're acceptable!I also managed to snap a photo of Romily wearing her new dress yesterday. Doesn't she look pleased with herself? Unfortunately it's a bit blurry - I was lucky to get that photo - she just goes nutso when I'm trying to take photos of her these days.

No sewing here this weekend. Have been busy with dinner guests last night - we haven't seen them for months - and a playdate for Romily this morning at my friend's place. Romily and I have had long sleeps together yesterday and today, which is lovely, but boy it chews into your weekend!

And I'm sorry I've been so slack keeping up with people's blogs. 512 unread posts, according to Bloglines. I've been so tired that getting onto the computer just hasn't been happening. I'll get there eventually :)

Only nine weeks left at work and then I'll be on maternity leave awaiting the arrival of #2. Bring it on. There's so much going on at work I am just wishing the next nine weeks away! I hope the bub lets me have a least a week at home putting my feet up!

Hoppy Easter

Well the Easter Bunny has been and gone for another year, thoroughly spoiling Romily along the way. She had her first Easter egg hunt at Granddad's place and had the best time. She was so excited she couldn't actually speak upon finding eggs, but just madly gesticulate and shout 'eee'!

She got lots of little eggs (which haven't all yet been eaten), a medium sized egg and two 'giant, 'normous eggs' from the big bunny. She devoured one largish egg and we've saved the others for later. You should have seen the sugar rush! She went ballistic. I made her drink a glass of milk along with eating the medium egg. She was like a little drunkard towards the end! She's now mad-keen for more chocolate, so we are rationing it sensibly...she doesn't get much 'junk', so we don't want to change that...a little treat along the way works for all of us!Dressed as a turtle (her own creation) at Granddad's house...what a dag!

We had a lovely time in Bendigo, the city (in central Victoria) is a gorgeous old mining town and has a huge family-f0cused Bendigo Easter Festival every year, which is capped off by a parade through the city streets, complete with a Chinese dragon, a huge nod to Bendigo's important Chinese heritage. There were lots of activities in parks located around town and Romily had a wonderful time playing in the huge and very well set-up adventure playgrounds, as well as walking among the trees and having her face painted for the very first (and subsequently second) time - all for free! Here she is as a bunny - she just LOVED it!

The next day, she was 'Lucky' the dog. She cried when I washed the face paint off in her bath that night - 'I don't want to turn back into Romily' over and over again. I kid you not. Her fantasy world is in full flight these days!

We did put her on a couple of paid rides - the first one was an insistent, ambitious attempt at her first inflatable obstacle course, but she came a cropper when a couple of bigger boys landed on her head while she was still trying to get into the ride. It all ended in tears, so the nice lady pulled Romily out and gave her her ticket back. She then chose a much more age-appropriate ride on some cars that drive around a carousel! She didn't want to get off that one, so there were more tears! She cheered up eventually at the playground, where she mastered a small slide and got all her self-confidence back :)Of course what's a family holiday without a little drama? My father-in-law's partner, the one for whom I made my short and stout teapot and who is waiting for an operation to remove very painful gall stones, managed to slip on some tiles at her son's house, land heavily, and fracture her upper left arm! The poor woman - she can't take a trick right now. Fortunately the break should mend within eight weeks and it has only pushed her surgery back by two weeks.

My parents joined us in Bendigo for the Easter Monday parade and had a lovely time catching up with my FIL. Do the two granddads look besotted? All too soon it was time to drive the nine hours home to Canberra - a day spent driving through much-needed soaking rain - it didn't stop until we go to Canberra. I saw water running in creek beds for the first time - I've lived here for six years. Cows in the paddocks looking confused and cockatoos and galahs hanging upside down from power lines having a wash in the rain! No one in this parched country would complain about having such welcome rain - it was a nice way to end the weekend.

-------

On the job front, not such good news. I was successful in being selected as the preferred candidate for the temporary promotion I had so wanted to get. Unfortunately, the head of my organisation personally put a stop to it as I'm 'needed' in my current job until he retires in seven weeks time. He wants me to help him compile all the material he's accumulated over the past 44 years in our organisation and 'trusts' me to do it right. I cannot tell you how angry I am at being held back in my career at such a critical juncture. If I had been allowed to do the job for three months I would have had a very good shot at landing it permanently before I went on maternity leave - no I have no chance at all, and by the time I go back to work in September 2009 all my hard work will be forgotten, he will have moved on, as will many other key people and I will have to re-establish myself all over again. His selfish move has put my career back by two years and I am personally very disappointed at his lack of leadership and support for someone who has worked so hard and loyally over the past 12 months.

-----

I will no doubt get over it when I hold my BABY BOY in my arms in mid-August! Yes, you read right, we are having a boy, according to the sonographer who did our morphology scan yesterday. A bit of a shock, really, as I thought we were having another girl. I had really wanted a little sister for Romily, but it's not to be. She's destined to be the only granddaughter on both sides. Ah well, she'll be spoilt by the grandparents and have lots of protective cousins and a brother. The scan showed a healthy little bubba in there, so that's very good news. It's quite amazing to think our family will be complete in another 20 or so weeks :)
