Alexandra's quilt is finished!

Well I must confess I am feeling a little proud of myself - I have finished my first quilt! Thanks to my helper Carl, here it is!

This is the one I have been making for my friend's new little daughter Alexandra. I am very happy with the way it turned out.
My in the ditch machine quilting certainly could have been better, but practise makes perfect, so I'd better practise some more! And, as Joyce pointed out, that's why I should choose meandering or wavy patterns next time LOL!

I hope Di likes it and I hope the bubba thinks it's very cuddly and snuggly - not to mention bright!

  1. Looks great Lily! One solution to the stitch in the ditch is to do a small wavy line over all the seams. Accomplishes the same thing, is much easier to do, and looks just fine. I've done this before and have been very happy with the results.

  4. The quilt is lovely. What baby wouldn't love the bright colors. I am doing stitch in the ditch on my nine patch and regretting the decision. It was a nice quilt until I started quilting it. Now it's another couch quilt. Oh well, as you say, live and learn.

  5. Just an adorable quilt, Lily. I know Alexandra will LOVE it!

As for in-the-ditch quilting, it's pretty forgiving. I think after the quilt is washed a couple of times, the stitching lines kind of disappear anyway. I did discover when I made the quilted jackets for my grandsons that just quilting wavy lines over the whole area in both directions looks wonderful, too. And if you do those lines on the diagonal, it's even better...no issues with pushing excess fabric ahead of the needle because you're working on the diagonal. Try it, you'll like it!

  7. The quilt is so adorable and bright! Just the perfect thing for a baby! Contrary to what some say, stitch in the ditch is not easy at all! I still have trouble with getting that seam right in the center and then you have to worry about which way the seam allowance turns, etc. etc. I agree with Patti. A wavy line sometimes works better! and is easier!

  8. Hi Lily,

I made my way over here from Tina's Blog.
Your baby quilt is gorgeous, don't worry about your stitch in the ditch, it's tricky and besides quilts aren't mean to be perfect no matter what the quilt-police say, they're meant to be loved.
